PAPER, PORTAL, LIMBO
3 – 18 October 2013
Edward Wakefield’s collages, as shown at three, explored the endless possibilities of portals and ellipses. These portals act as windows, gateways, doors and tunnels whereby things enter, escape or beckon. He is particularly inspired by science fiction and horror imagery; the underpinning theme of these strange spaces that interest Wakefield is that of the unexpected and the unusual.
Wakefield describes collage artists as “architects, doctors, mad scientists and comedians. They cut through the fabric of the every day and show the beautiful limbo waiting beyond. These portals are a way into that limbo.” Wakefield lets us dip our toes into those portals and other worlds and let’s us see these realms through his eyes.
For the performance on the launch evening Wakefield read a series of short cut up stories to create disjointed and beautiful flash fiction - a performative extension of his collage practice.
